In my view, sounds and images are types of media that are exceptionally rich, in the sense that they are difficult to summarize succinctly. Just as it's often said that a picture is worth a thousand words, sounds similarly offer a thousand ways to be depicted. In this project, I propose a method to represent them, allowing for an exploration that captures their multifaceted nature.

A-Sampler, a key project in my portfolio, is an interface designed to explore and dissect sonic culture. This is an online sampler that uses machine learning to delve into the substance of music, offering a new approach to manipulate musical matter.

A CULTURE EXPLORATION …

One of the intentions behind this work is to map the realm of music culture. Many of the contemporary productions we listen to today carry an "inherited baggage", whether it's from samples they may have used or the broader influences that have shaped them. The idea is to highlight this genealogy that connects tracks to each other over time, through the shifting landscape of influences.

… THROUGH SOUND MANIPULATION

I also like the idea of making sound material manipulable, providing users with innovative ways to interact with it. I would like to feel the same sensation of vertigo that I felt when I discovered the Ableton software and how sound could be manipulated with the tools they offer. I seek to create new practices that meld technology and culture, revealing innovative pathways for creativity in the sonic landscape.

Created with musicians in mind, A-Sampler doesn't necessitate specialized knowledge. It focuses on sound representation and ensures that it is both adaptable and intuitive, allowing any music lover to immerse themselves in the world of sound.

An A-Sampler's major features is its ability to isolate various components of a musical piece into separate stems. This separation is made possible through source separation algorithms that I mentioned in my project 'The blurry mix'. For example, users can dissect a drum track and reconstruct a new kit, with each individual sound being automatically analyzed and categorized.

The initial objective of this project is to provide a multi-scale sampling of sound. From dissecting whole music sections and loops to micro-sampling single drum hits, the tool offers a versatile range of options for creative exploration.

A-SAMPLER invites us to contemplate how culture is created, remixed, and passed down through generations. It raises questions about originality, influence, and the collective nature of creativity, leading us to reevaluate how we understand music and, by extension, culture itself.
